Voltage wrote:"The true Somali is a lazy person, for his dignity does not permit him to do manual work". This is what amazes me, to this day the "low caste" in the wretched Somali culture are the people with skills...imagine how insulting being called "tumaal" would be in any other developed society

"Oh you are a carpenter,.. you are a tumaal, a blacksmith, you actual have technological skill, you actually make something, that's it, you are not marrying my daughter, you are beneath her, a poor illiterate nomadic girl daughter of a poor, illiterate, and ignorant nomadic father"! Amazing

That always beat me. But, I think the civil war has thought as alot. It would be amusing to see Somalis repeat these very mistakes.

So the English man is arguing that since somalis are lazy they chose to breed camels in a desert and refuse to farm? oh and since the English are active people they chose to breed cows and............... ????? perhaps play hid and seek with it and not sleep under a tree during the grazing. I fail to understand the logic, England is wet and rainy with good soil thus English adopted farming and rearing cows which needs alot of grass and water, somalis reared camles which is adopted to dry land and don't need grass.

Been active or lazy has nothing to do on how your enviroment forces you to adopt. Its cheesy 19 century English vanity

Well we are all midgaan today because we all cut hair, and drive taxis, and practically all work in the service industry, at least the older generation or the people who were not as fortunate to start fast. It better change

The problem is the ones left back home

'For his dignity does not permit him to do manual work"

Waryaahee this white man see the somali man as equal. In those time-- English men of no profession were called gentle men. They lived a life of leisure and kibirness.

"IT will be fatal to the peace of the country if the Somali should be treated with that contempt which is often shown to black races by Europeans"

Interesting. This speaks volume of how Somalis are validated both by their appearence, their reputation for being dangerous and their pride. Basically, this smart english gentleman is saying- Dont be stupid. A somali man is our equal. He is not an adoon who is happy to be given a slice of fufu plate and bow down to his master. This Englishman basically is saying ----All somalis are walking Lords And ladys. No wonder i am soooo into English culture. Ileyn i dont believe i am a negro from the african continent.

No, it is reality. Your response is really very Somali because you give a subconscious bias that Somalis are the center of the world. Did you forget we are one of the so many pastoralist cultures? Who else culture formed as we did being trully lazy, disdaining work, and making fun and stigmatizing those that work and have skill? I will never forget something Ould Abdallah the UN representative for Somalia said in Washington to a think thank I can't remember. He was laughing when he said "the Somalis think they are the center of the world, each one Somalis has a very grand view of themselves and the position and importance of Somalia, while the truth is my whole energy is spent on making sure anyone is really paying attention to Somalia"...you know what's funny? This is a Mauritanian Muslim not European vanity and it's true!

My friend, we are one of so many pastoral and nomadic culture and while environment of nomadic culture is generally same in that not a lot of material welath or material skill is embraced, almost none of the cultures I have seen in that group are as averse to work enough to stigmatize it and put their skilled society members as the low caste...Arabs are our nearest replica in terms of culture and geography and skilled people are celebrated, men who could make swords or fashion horse shoes were the friends of kings but in the somali world, they couldn't even get the hand of the most ugliest, poorest, and unfortunate nomadic girl.

Baqara,

When I begn this forum in 1999 you were here reading Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austin. 11 years later now that you are in your mid 30's you still reading the same chapter, don't you make progress in brain and pages?
