Dhagaxdheer School Project was the largest project and the most productive project Guryasamo has accomplished so far. After careful and well-planned consideration the project was chosen to be located at Dhagaxdheer village of Togdheer region, which is 60 miles south of Burao, the capital city of Togdheer region.
The project had two phases: the planning phase of the project which was all about planning the project in terms of location, resources, time and cost; and the execution phase of the project which was about starting and finishing of the actual work of the project.
The preliminary study of the project began in December 2003 and lasted for two months and the final project plan began in February 2004 and was completed April 2004. And the actual work of the project began in May 2004 and was successfully completed on 24th August 2004. The school was officially opened on 1st September 2004.
The Dhagaxdheer School Project is wholly funded and managed by Guryasamo. The project initially cost thirty-six thousand US dollars (US$36000.00) and lasted for nine months including planning. But the running cost of the project is around US$25000.00 a year which is also funded by Guryasamo.
The Dhagaxdheer School Project has been a success and has benefited a large number of children who had no proper school and no hope of ever having a formal education prior to this project. One of the project’s key objectives was to give children in Dhagaxdheer and its surroundings a chance to have formal education and the results speak for themselves. The project has provided learning opportunity for more than 600 children in that area since it began in 2004. It has changed the way the community feels about schools and children’s rights to have formal education. It has also broken the cycle of illiteracy for a large number of children and has offered them a promising future through education (please see figures 1 to 14 for the different phases of the project from start to finish).
