How to improve my Somali language skills?
Hi,
First of all let me introduce myself I’m a half Somali half Icelandic guy living in Germany (You are probably thinking what are the odds, I understand). My father is Somali my mother is Icelandic, I have been raised by both parents but Somali was never the language we spoke home therefore resulting in my poor understanding of the language. The city I was raised in only had two other Somali families living there we barely had contact with so I never interacted with Somalis other than my own family. I want to change this all and improve my Somali skills, so my questions to all you guys what is the best method to do so? Do you have any good websites or know good books on this?
Thanks in advance!

Because my mother does not speak Somali, wouldn't it be confusing for the children? I understand and speak it a little bit though and even been on holiday to Somalia once but it didn't help much.Buhodle-Gurl wrote:How come uR father is not teaching you at home?![]()

Extremly tiny even in the large cities such as Berlin or the Ruhr area. I think that smaller countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands and Denmark have larger Somali communities.Kanada wrote:![]()

I'm very quick to learn. I spoke 99% Hindi when I first visited Somalia. And comin' back from there. I was transformed into straight up qaldan.Euro_Somali wrote:Because my mother does not speak Somali, wouldn't it be confusing for the children? Qaldan= Northern Accent.
Re: How to improve my Somali language skills?
Okay
Somali language is all about the basics. Once you understand the basics of sentence structure and grammer, then all you need is practice. It is good to be around Somali speaking people and speaking the language as much as possible to pick up new vocabulary. It is also good to watch Somali videos like islamic lectures and listen to bbc somali once in a while. There are some somali grammer books on amazon.com and some others by some russian guy.I'l look for the books

Re: How to improve my Somali language skills?
Thank for the advice
I think I have a good command of the basic stuff (Hooyo, Abo, Caano, Biyoo, Mees, Kursi, Nal, Weel, Gabadh etc) but putting it all together in a good structure is where I fail, I sound so rusty and unconfident. A russian guy that wrote a book on Somali grammar? Very strange, I would love to know his name if possible.

Somali has different types of dialects? Never knew this, I thought it was a very unified language, what is the most widely understood dialect?Buhodle-Gurl wrote: I'm very quick to learn. Another reason to marry only within your own.
Your father has failed you, my dear.

Accent not dialect. I think May May and Common Somali are different dialects to each other.Euro_Somali wrote:Somali has different types of dialects?
