Every sheikh who lives in the West has to toe the line and demonize Al-Shabaab. That's the policy. Those who don't toe the line get arrested, threatened, deported, tortured, etc. One the other hand, if Western authorities are in favor of Al-Shabaab, every sheikh has to toe the line and praise Al-Shabaab. Those sheikhs in the West aren't independent and cannot practice true Islam.

Sh. Ahmed Daahir Aweys used to be Salafi Jadiid years ago, but he's seen the light since then.

I listened to a recording of his from last year where he said most of today's Somali "Sheikhs" and religious groups are all paid by either the Saudi government or the U.S. He said even he at one point used to get paid by a Saudi prince for advocating Salafi Jadiidi theology in Somalia. With the money he said he was able to open enough madrasahs and even influence some well-respected imaams. He since then repented. Allahu aclam.

No. It's the truth. Abukar Arman is an ordinary man, not a sheikh, yet, because he wrote a few articles in favor of Al-Shabaab, Neocons shook his life upside down. If not for the intervention of close friends at higher places, he could have been arrested, stripped of his citizenship, deported or worse sent to a Gitmo-type prison. Now, he writes incoherent anti-Shabaab articles. Like I said, every sheikh will has to toe the line.

It all comes to money. I remember coming of age in '88-'90 and how much the "Akhwaan" thing spread. I didn't know at the time, but it had major financial backing behind it. Thanks to the Saudis who put money in pockets of any Somali wadaad who went to Saudi Arabia. Old Suufis had no chance. Walahi the whole country was swept right under from their feet and there was nothing they could do. It wasn't all bad. All that money opened the way for some of the brightest minds to rise up including Sh. Boqolsoon (aun).
