There has been no US Embassy in Somalia since 1991 and no Somali embassy here since 1991. So I doubt there has been any Somali visiotrs nominated. But I wanted to know if you all know any relatives or friends of your family who have participated in this program before the civil war? I saw a Djiboutian visitor in an Africa Women's Entrepreneurship Program (Hilary Clinton's favorite thing) last year and she was Somali so I was always wondering about Somalia nationals.

in a nutshell, people at the top of their respective fields are nominated by the embassy abroad and then are choosen here and then participate in an almost month long program that starts in DC and goes around the country to 4 or 5 cities/towns for networking and stuff like that..and apparently after this a lot of folks become prime ministers and all that nice higher end type shidd
I was wondering if any Somalia nationals had participated and I'm thinking my awoowe AUN did in the early 1960s as he was in the USA for a little bit and then came back on and off thereafter. I'm doing a bit of research on it.
Anyway let me see your thoughts, especially those of you who were around diplomats.

Apply for internships through big name international orgs like UN, UNICEF, W.H.O. as a Somali citizen. They distribute jobs proportionally amongst member nations so less competition than an American.

I don't think you got it.Nanees wrote:Apply for internships through big name international orgs like UN, UNICEF, W.H.O. as a Somali citizen. They distribute jobs proportionally amongst member nations so less competition than an American.
The IVLP program I just mentioned is an OLD thing from after WW2 and was designed for professionals in countries around the world to come to the USA for programs about their respective fields. So if you have doctors from Syria for example, there were programs about hospital management and stuff like that. Then they'd come to DC, stay for a week, then embark around the USA to a few cities to network and have professional exchanges with their counterparts there. It is a cultural diplomatic initiative.
What I'm wondering is.. does anyone on this forum know anyone before the 90s who participated in an IVLP cause I'm sure Somalis must have been a country of focus
