So Confused. Help!!!

I am a young man who recently graduated from uni in Canada. My mom wants me to be do a Master of Science degree in audiology and become an audiologist. A friend of hers has a daughter who will be going into this field and she can't stop talking about it since. She says I need to study something practical in order to make a decent living and not bother with the social science fluff I was planning to persue in graduate school. But I don't think I would feel fulfilled diagnosing and treating the hearing impaired day in and day out. Granted I would make a decent living, with avg salary in Canada for audiologists hovering at about $75,000/yr, but theres more to life than money right? I want my career to provide me with prestige and fulfillment and besides a comfortable lifestyle I doubt audiology would give me with either. What do you guys think? Should I chase my dreams and pursue grad studies in the social sciences and lead a life of penury for the next 6 years, barely scraping by on a measly stipend or should I heed my mothers advice and resign myself to a secure, predictable and monotonous life as an audiologist? At least I wouldn't have to worry about my future wife nagging me about bills and new clothes and I could build my mom a house in Somalia right? And to make it more complicated, financially speaking, I do plan on marrying in about a year and s halfs time.

Have you guys ever head of audiology? Is it a respected field? And before you guys say anything let me say yes, I do care what people think. I am more status conscious (hence the prestige factor I mentioned above) than I am money conscious. I would rather be a professor making $60,000/yr than a high school teacher making 100,000/yr. So What should I do? Pursue grad studies and maybe become a prof or policy analyst one day or listen to hooyo?

My advice is it is better to be broke and still be doing what you enjoy than make money and hate your job.
I hate my job even though i make above what you quoted for the audiologist job.

If you want a job and security, study something that will get you a job. If you are studying for the fun of it, then all power to you

You have to specialize in a field in demand.

Besides, policy analysts are mostly economists (master, PhD) You'll have to study economics to go into policy analysis.

Also, most policy analysis jobs in Canada are in the federal govt. Are you bilingual C/B/C level? If you're not, forget about it. You won't get in. Don't waste your time.

Your love of a subject will sometimes land you in McDonalds working minimum wage after graduation. 4-6 years gone.

May be that is because the subject was different? Or the suggestions/advises he offered were based on a different set of facts?

Money is important, happiness is also important. Some people have both in the careers they choose, most people though have one or the other but not both. Now you can decide early on and make the choice that you think will make you happy as a professional. Money with misery is unhealthy and less attractive than decent/moderate income with happiness. You will wake up everyday and commute to work knowing what is waiting for you. You would rather be looking forward than dread to get there. Your parents can suggest what they think is best for you based on their views, but in the end, going against their wish in a case like this is also legitimate.
