How many Somali books have you read??

Post by Abaay »

Salaam,
It is believed that a country, a community or a nation state does not exist until it has written down its history, thoughts and conducts, that is written books about it self. It is not enough to write the books though, the books need to be read as well...talked about...used and reused...
Now hands up..how many of you have read somali books written in Somali??
Let us start with me..I'm very ashamed of my self to say that I, even though I'm fluent in Somali, have only read a one single book...
'Maana Fay'... and that was for a project...as I said before..very ashamed...now I do understand that there is limited accessibility of Somali books..but is that enough excuse???

would love to hear your thoughts about that guys...

To be honest. I haven't read a single Somali book in af Somali. I have only read articles and stories on the Internet. It’s mainly because I haven’t been able to get hold of any Somali books. It’s so weird because we have, English books, Italian books, Swahili, Arabic and French books but not a single Somali book. That is if you don’t count the Arabic-Somali Quran translation my mum bought to prove to me “adornment” includes your hair and neck.

Anyway, there are a lot of online materials, if like me you taught yourself how to read and write af Somaali. Rolling Eyes

I haven' t seen a somali book in real life let alone read one. My spoken somali is excellent. I can read it pretty well but my writing is rubbish. S-net has helped me along the way with my written af-somali. That i'm thankful for Smile

I have read "xeebti geerida" By Shirwac, A qoon la'aani waa cudur jaceyl (ignorance is the enemy of love), Cilmi iyo caado(I think it was written by Cawl) and many short novels. I can't recall the plots because it was years ago.

No wonder then most Somali women are stupid about Somali affairs and are 100% naive.
