SUICIDES AMONG SOMALIS

I dont know about America but suicides among young somali men(and not so young) is rife in Europe. I personally know at least six guys who killed themselves over the last few years.

Back in Somalia suicides were rare in the north and almost completely unheard of in the South. In the North I remember women committed most suicides and their preferred method was the kerosense and the match. Usually these were girls who became pregnant outside marriage or whom their husbands remarried. But I hardly recall men topping themselves.

So what is causing the epidemic of suicides in europe among Somali males? Does it happen in america? And why is it almost an exculsively Northern affair? Are Northners more prone to depression?

I haven't heard of any somalis committing suicide here in America although a lot of peeps I know were killed. I think the reason these men kill themselves is that they feel useless here in the west. With no prior education and too old for school, the only thing they can do there is do manual jobs. Since there is a welfare system there, they are no longer needed and they feel that their lives are pointless. I don't know man. I am just taking wild guess. But I believe America offers more opportunities for one to make something out of him or herself than europe does.

Interesting. Perhaps the UK Somalis could tell us their views as to why somalis kill themselves here when they did not do so back home?

i also know of few people who took the easy way out from the life they were leading and the predicament they put themselves in. i know for a fact that lot of young brothers here in the uk who droped out of school early, then developed a habit for alcohol, weed and jaad. you might say there are millions others who use the same thing but dont end up topping themselves so makes this guys any different?

take jadd for example. shewing jaad responsibily is one thing but when you do it 24/7 day in day out and dont eat properly its bound to have an effect on your health especialy your sanity. next they start talking to themselves or end up in a mental health or take one l;ast nap.

then there are the added factors of families, neglected responsibilities and an overwhelming guilt that can take a man to bring of distruction. when you first came to the west and easily get the hang of how things are done compare to back home, its easy to drift away without paying too much atention to the pitfalls. some come back by grace of God and some dont.

I remember once how a hopeless drug addict somali male wanted to commit suicide. Fortunately the mosque leaders talked him out of it.. and it worked like wonders. It was a sad situation.

I know of one somali boy who almost committed suicide. It was also drug related. He nearly decapitated himself in the bathroom while high on cocaine. It happened in Denver, Colorado.

One of the very few things I am very proud of is that I saved a somali woman from killing herself a few years ago and tonite is the first time I ever talked about it! My closest friends and family members don't know it.

She called the technical support of her ISP where I happen to be the guy who picked the phone on the other end. She wanted her account reinstated which I refused. I started talking to her in Somali after she gave unique Somali names. To make a long story short, she told me she is wearing jeans and t-shirt and went to the balcony three times. The only thing that stopped her from jumping 19th floor was the love she had for kids. I left work and went to her home. After two hours of comforting her, I finally convinced her not to jump saying her kids will be left in the hands of child protection agencies. She was having a very hard time and her husband was away all the time spending most of his time chewing kat and sleeping @ his friends’ homes. I gave her free temporary internet account and encouraged her to seek professional help. Walaahi I felt sorry for that Somali sister. She was trying hard but life was so unbearable. I used to call her in the following months and she told me she never thought about it after the nite I left work to save her. B4 I went to her, she swore she’ll jump if I call the cops on her.

Allah has been soooooooooooooooo nice to me all my life and maybe that’s how I treat other people.
