Mash'Alllah!

Dental tech here. They both look and sound like they will make fine clinicians. Honest, I have a feel for that.

"Two young Somalis who are about to start their dental school education at the university of Minnesota's dental school. Both have done their undergraduate and are now aiming high".

The article said they're about to start not graduated.

Do you know how many Somalis who are about to "start" medical school? There is a deference between finishing and about to start.

They look and sound to me like dentists, so I think they are at least heading in the right direction.

Getting into school is more than half the battle.

For the record, I will make myself available to any such student, should they have technical questions.

I have limited means, but they have my full support.

Grant, if you are indeed a dentist!

1. How can you stop, gums/teeth bleeding when tooth-brushing!

2. does sweets or candy have negative effect on the teeth!

Guys,

I am not a dentist. I am a dental technician. I have been certified in crown and bridge for 27 years. I make porcelain and gold crowns and bridgework, appliances, veneers, etc. I do NOT work in the mouth.

I have been around dentistry, and a patient myself, long enough that I have a fair feel for the field and what does and does not work. I will try to answer some simple questions.

Bleeding gums is caused by an infection of any of several forms of bacteria, most of which can feed on sugars. Brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouth washes, all serve to reduce both the bacterial load in the mouth and the foods they feed on. Professional tooth cleaning by a hyienist serves to eliminate accumulations of dead bacteia and decaying food on teeth called plaque which otherwise serve as hiding places for active bacteria.

It is the accumulations and high bacterial loads thatt destroy tooth, bone and gum tissues, leading to tooth loss.

The moral here is: keep your teeth clean!

It is my understanding that bright orange and red in the teeth is from chewing Qat.

An opaque white color, occurring usually in splotches, is called decalcification and can be caused by drinking water with high levels of flouride and some other minerals in the water.

Both conditions may be aesthecially challenging, but I don't think by themselves actually injure the teeth.

As a side note, taking tetracycline antobiotic while the adult teeth are growing causes them to become dark gray-brown with a bluish incisal. Not pretty at all.

Grant, do you mind, not using the term Mashallah. It doesn't suit you're moral. To make matters any worse, don't use any verbal islamic gestures at all, if your not muslim.

Cheroke,

I'll be happy to translate it for you. That would be "Thank the Lord. "

Do you object to me thanking our Creator for two intelligent young men who are entering my field?

Will you please explain to me what the language I pray or express myself in has to do with my morals?

B-Max,

According to the ADA, "the average net income for an independent private practitioner who owned all or part of his or her practice in 2003 was $177,340 for a general practitioner and $300,200 for a specialist."

They are earning more than physicians. Incomes have gone up significantly again in the last three years, due in largest part to implants and cosmetic dentistry.
