FEAR ALLAH
Islamists and ordinary Muslims as well as Christians and Jews always exclaim above in order to keep people in line or just as a matter of social classification in behaviour. In fact it is used as a compliment: so and so is a God-fearing man is often stated to justify acceptance of someone. I worry: All the god-fearing people I ever met were morons of varying shades.
Why fear? What is the normal human reaction to fear? If I fear something I avoid them or fight or run like hell away from them.
And if I cant do any of the above I will certainly not have any respect for the object of my fear. So why fear God?

Galol,
God is the Supreme Power, it is true that whenever you fear a peer or a human being, you run away from him/her.
Fear of God will draw you to God for Deliverance.
You are looking at Fear in Isolation. Islamically, you look at Hope in conjunction with Fear:
"Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (charity in Allâh's Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them"
There is a common duah (roughly): "No Deliverance, No Deliverer, No Capability of Deliverance except TO You."

How is that?
"You are looking at Fear in Isolation. Islamically, you look at Hope in conjunction with Fear: "
I see no circumstances where hope is seen through fear ...except in very unequal football matches(Chelsea vs Accrington Stanley) and of course in this instance only seen from one side.

Because there is no other escape. There is no entity that can deliver you from Allah's wrath.
This is where the hope kicks in, by submitting to Allah (Islam) you can be delivered. This is where the mercy kicks in.
You're thinking of it as: "I have nothing to loose, I'm doomed........."
Hope destroys despair.

the fear you are talking about is the same as, when you have one too many pints at the local and want to drive home, you might fear that you could get into an accident; so the fear (common sense) stop you from doing a stupid thing you might regret...so equaly when Muslim say fear Allah, (its just another way of saying) if you dont you will regret it in yomal qiyama but the decision is yours still.
And if I cant do any of the above I will certainly not have any respect for the object of my fear. So why fear God?[/quote]
well, am sure there are things you respect eventhough you might fear them...if you are on a safary or in a zoo watching lions, you'll probably admirer the beast for his hunting ability amongst other things and wouldnt want to get too close (out of fear)....
so you see sometimes fear doesnt necesarily means somthing negative, but rather just good old common sense.

To my own knowledge the word FEAR has may meanings. Maybe your lacking, uncertain or perhaps just reluctant and narrow minded about the whole concept.
4 Words that came to my head concerning the Word FEAR:
-Apprehension; anxiety, worry, neverous
-Trepidation; concern, foreboding sinister
-Dread; dismay, terror, horror
-Alarm; distress, panic, fright
So to FEAR ALLAH it means to be Alarmed about his words, take concern, do not decline, be willing, eager, 'Enthusiastic' and devote your time in this world to him. His words, his message and the purpose of life. Life is something to fear itself, the hereafter, your destiny, the angels and your faith all lays in the name of Allah swt.

The Arabic word for the “fear of Allah” is taqwā . It comes from the root word meaning “to protect from something, to prevent”. Indeed, a person exhibits the fear of Allah by seeking to prevent Allah's punishment by carrying out what Allah has commanded of him and abstaining from what Allah has prohibited him.
Allah had called upon all people in every era to fear Him. Allah says: “And We had enjoined upon those who were given the Scripture before – as well as yourselves – to fear Allah.” [ Sūrah al-Nisā' : 131]
It is Allah's right over His servants that they fear Him as He ought to be feared. Allah says: “O you who believe! Fear Allah as He ought to be feared and do not die except as believers.” [ Sūrah Āl `Imrān : 102]
Ibn Mas`ūd explained what it means to fear Allah as He ought to be feared by saying: “It means that He is to be obeyed not disobeyed, remembered not forgotten, and shown gratitude not ingratitude.”
The fear of Allah is the path to forgiveness, salvation, and the attainment of Allah's mercy. Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good.” [ Sūrah al-Nahl : 128]
“And My mercy encompasses all things, and I shall decree it for those who fear Me.” [ Sūrah al-A`rāf : 156]
“He is worthy of being feared and worthy of granting forgiveness.” [ Sūrah al-Muddaththir : 56]
“And whoever fears Allah – He will pardon him his sins and grant him a great reward.” [ Sūrah al-Talāq : 5]
“Indeed, those who fear Allah will be among gardens and rivers, in a seat of truth near an All-Powerful Sovereign.” [ Sūrah al-Qamar : 54-55]
Allah promises those who fear Him that He will provide for their needs and grant them a way out of their worldly difficulties. Allah says: “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out, and provide for him from whence he could never imagine.” [ Sūrah al-Talāq : 2-3]
This is Allah's promise. We should draw strength from it when we are tried in life with difficulties that tempt us to resort to what Allah has forbidden.
