Puntland cannot be compared with anywhere in the South due to so many factors. Its basically Bari,Nugaal, and half of Mudug if I'm not mistaken. Its inhabited by one clan (primairly) and it doesn't border Ethiopia directly thus explaining lack of physical interference by Ethiopians. On top of that the civil war never passed Galkacyo, and the region never any war as there isn't any warring clans battling over prime realestate. Furthormore there neighbors with another peaceful state Somaliand so they ofcourse have incentive to compete with them. To their credit though they did a fabulous job taking care of business.

kismayo and the surrounding provinces were a much greater prize.

large sea port,longest airport runway in east africa,highway conecting with all of the south,including mogadishu,fertile farmlands and river,beatiful coastline for fishing and tourism,border with kenya for trade etc.
