I am totally blown away to hear that Jilib had a comercial bank in 1978. I had to go to Credito Somalo in Kismayu. I doubt there were more than a thousand people in the immediate area when I was there. How big did Jilib get?

Credito Somalo and whatever they called the banana-exporting company were the only companies I knew. Jilib had maybe three ducanles, the suuq and a cigarette stand. One barber shop. One family that ran a backery. One family that ran a daily bus service into Kismayu. Almost everyone else who lived in Jilib was connected either to one of the two (very small) schools, or to the government. My students were all the children of government employees. On second thought, the total population of Jilib proper was almost certainly under 500 in 1967.


Mohammed Shaykh Suleiman was the mayor. Sayid Cali (Abdullahi?)was director of the agricultural station across the river. Abdi Salad Seguleh was secretary to the Russian agricultural project outside of town. And those are most of the names I can remember.
