So i just came back from watching Captain Phillips
Overall i really enjoyed the film. The enticement, the suspense, the intensity etc was all real and it wasn't necessarily because of the camera effects (i dont watch many films at the cinema nowadays as they only look good because of the cinematic experience)..i loved the plot and felt like it was just a degree below the Black Hawk Down movie (BHD was good because the Americans didnt have their way eventually which was permanent occupation of the country)
Coming from a Somali perspective i felt naturally inclined to commiserate and sympathize with the pirates..mere fishermen who saw huge war-like ships just parading boastfully around our Waters with complete disregard for national sea regulations (i know Somalia is practically lawless in that respect which hurt me a little during the film) however of-course, it really is a criminal enterprise and the pirates were biting off more than they could chew. To me it felt like two wrongs were being played against each other (the pirates were agents who were under constant fire from their greasy selfish overlords on the ground whilst the US shipmen were pawns of a greater Power who breached our sovereignty paddling in our Waters illegally)
The acting wasn't 10/10 but then again it wasn't meant to be the highlight of the Film. The main Somali star Barkhad Abdi was fantastic (he was my fav), he displayed the well-cultured Somali resilience and stubbornness in the face of others. To him it was simple. Do a dangerous stunt like this, gain some hard earned money, get out the slums and live a better life, albeit through an entirely unethical and unislamic way but still...I loved how being under the nose of the US navy didn't scare him at all, he was out to make a fortune from a harsh situation under any circumstance. He was respected in his village town as a leading pirate and the hijacking comes to show why that is. Just to sucessfully coordinate a jet boat, fight the ocean current, climb a 30-storey high ship and capture hostages is really challenging and a test of confidence. Tom Hanks, at times had confused me with his emotions and reactions, he played a calm demeanor then would occasionally lash out uncontrollably (during his tenure as a hostage he tried writing a letter, when one of the kidnappers snatched it off him he ran at him and tried attacking him viciously like wtf? The guy is a ticking-time bomb with a short temper you don't really wanna ruffle the feathers of an armed and drugged-up thug like that...)
In the end it just got me more politically motivated, our Waters need protecting yo. We should do more to support a strong Somali state that will take back what is rightfully theirs.

I agree, we should protect our seas, but the enemy within is worse than the enemy from outside. Or are we just going to continue pretending all the dumping of toxic and harmful waste on our seas weren't done with the consensus of local clan leaders?

Excellent review for those who haven't seen it. A lot of people are saying Somalis are being humiliated in the movie, but I saw the opposite. It's great advert for our courage and determination. I was reading somewhere there were about 700 Somalis who come for the casting call and I bet most of them think it's whack movie because they didn't get the part

Four Pirates only armed with AK's , got their boats stuck in the high sea. Their determination got them another boat in which they used to get after the big ship and boarded the ship. And then at the end, it took four American warships, navy seal crew to take the four pirates down. Tell me this ain't courage ad determination regardless the ending ?

They're ambitious, I'll give them that, but let's not idolize pirates. There are so many other ways to make an honest day's work, but piracy is not one of it.BlackRain wrote:Four Pirates only armed with AK's , got their boats stuck in the high sea. Are you really justifying hijacking ships for ransom?

Re: So i just came back from watching Captain Phillips
Couple of days ago, you where all against Afwayne The Habargidir pirate leader and were saying hes criminal, even tho hes the main reason why Somali and east African fish stock increased while he was hunting and chasing away all the big companies who where looting Somalis water, and now since he stopped his man from pirating thanks Sheekh shariif who done the hard work convincing His hawiye pirate clans Afwayne and his mans to stop for the sake of him, the west claim victory and not sheekh shariif, they say we defeate piracy and its in decline, now the fish stock in Somali warers are in decline and is free for every one.
So question of Why you all the Darod clowns why against him? because he is Hawiye rite?
ya'all biiiiaaaarch aka biches

Glad to see you're also not interested in an extended news report. LolBaastoUnit wrote:I always agree with you.Cherine wrote:Ermm no thanks. I saw captain hook or whatever his name was on the news when their ship got hijacked . ..so sheekadu halkaas ayeey ku dhamaanaysay.
