Elected? Was there a general election in Somalia recently? I missed it.[/quote]
Ofcourse by the Islamic Parliment and don't forget we got the full support of the people. So the election was what you western people called it "democratically" elected. Don't you love it just like the Iranian government "democratically" elected.

Well, we'll see how Aweys fares in a real election - should there ever be one.
The Iranians don't have a fair process. The Clerics have essentially veto power on most of what the President and Parliament can and can not do. With that veto power, they severely constrain reform, as they did when Khatami was President.
Of course, the ICU or whatever they want to call themselves today, went out of their way to say they wanted positive relations with the west. Then they inexplicably bring in Aweys, who is openly hostile to the west. Hmmmm. We'll see what happens.

Yes, I do find it funny. I could go on about this topic, but I'll let it go before my blood pressure rises.

MAD MAC,
You know very well the US doesn't have the treasure or the manpower to do anything serious in Somalia except cause noise from the sidelines. Especially, when they don't have the equivalent of a Northern Alliance to fight a proxy ground war.
So it is in their best interest to get good terms and agreements from the UIC right now. Now is the time for negotiation, terms you can hold the UIC to on 'moral grounds' of keeping your agreements as a Muslim.
The US so far doesn't have a clear charge against Aweys.......it's all murky, "he said she said".
The UIC said that if the US accuses them of harboring Al-Qaeda, they are more than willing to allow for people to come check.
If the US can't or is not willing "call their bluff" then they have to refrain from accusations. Someone can't be a terrorist just "cause I say so!"
I just saw this FRONTLINE program about the Iraq intelligence & how Cheney kept pushing for it when the CIA knew the intelligence wasn't there.
McCormack probably can't identify the continent Somalia is on, so let's get real intelligence on the table or the US should refrain from saying "suspected terrorist"......

That's what I like the Clerics to have full power of everything and anything going on in the country.

I like any Govement that is not a puppet to the west preferably an Islamic Government rule by the Sharica Law.

hOMO don't waste your breathe fagoot
Feb 2006 more than 10 Ceyr leaders went to nairobi FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL to get to the heart of this b.s. about sheikh hassan, they met with CIA officals and the US ambassador Bellamy and asked him if they have anything whatsoever linking Aweys to any terrorism or any anti-american act for that matter, the americans said they had nothing, but remours given to them by so called "somali experts", who all happen to be darood.
The Ceyr pretty much told the dumbfounded american officials a simple fact on somalia: don't believe a word that clan enemies say about each other, especially their enemies. and that was done.
and quote: "Aweys said yesterday that he did not know of any terrorists in Somalia. ``If we discover them we will take suitable steps against them," he said.
and quote: State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States would wait to see if the militia shows a commitment to fight terrorism, makes an effort to meet the humanitarian needs of the Somali people, and works with the interim government. ``If they want to have partners in the international community, if they want to work with the US, they want to work with the other members of the international community, we'll see if they meet those standards," McCormack said.
and quote one of the bastaards who go feed the misinformation about sheikh hassan and almost ironically himself ended up in federal prison for lying
Omar Jamal, director of the Somali Justice and Advocacy Center in St. Paul, Minn., a hub for expatriate Somalis, said he was troubled by Aweys's rise to power.
``The election of Aweys is a clear signal that the moderates are losing, and extremists are taking the lead, and now the next possible step is that they will impose a Taliban style of government," he said, referring to the Islamic militia that was ousted by a US-led war in Afghanistan.

"You know very well the US doesn't have the treasure or the manpower to do anything serious in Somalia except cause noise from the sidelines. Especially, when they don't have the equivalent of a Northern Alliance to fight a proxy ground war."
Of course it does. The Somalis are FAR from united at this point, and you know it. We could easily support the Darood out of Puntland and work with Ethiopia to support Hawiye Warlords allowing them to regroup in the Ogaden and the Islamists would be powerless to do a thing about that. And it would be cheap, not some hugely expensive exercise. The issue is not whether we could, but whether we should. I am of the opinion that first we should wait and see.
"So it is in their best interest to get good terms and agreements from the UIC right now. Now is the time for negotiation, terms you can hold the UIC to on 'moral grounds' of keeping your agreements as a Muslim."
I agree with this right now. It is difficult to determine if the ICU is a bad or good development for the US. It could well be that their official line, that they want positive relations, is true.
"The US so far doesn't have a clear charge against Aweys.......it's all murky, "he said she said".
The UIC said that if the US accuses them of harboring Al-Qaeda, they are more than willing to allow for people to come check."
Again, the proof will be in the pudding. We'll be watching, of that there is no doubt. As for Aweys, the only proof you need is to listen to what comes out of his mouth (although there is other evidence which I am not going to go into here). He is clearly hostile to the west and the US.
"If the US can't or is not willing "call their bluff" then they have to refrain from accusations. Someone can't be a terrorist just "cause I say so!" "
Sure they can. And we can say whatever we want. It's called freedom of speech. But beyond that, killing Aweys would not be difficult if we decided to do it. Especially if he is a sitting member of government. But right now, we certainly won't do that. We want to see what we have to work with in Mog. At least that's my interpretation.
"I just saw this FRONTLINE program about the Iraq intelligence & how Cheney kept pushing for it when the CIA knew the intelligence wasn't there."
I am inclined to agree with this line of thinking. The problem for the Bush administration is they knew they wanted to invade Iraq and remove Hussein, but they could not use the real reason and therefore had to look for one that they might be able to develop a coalition behind. At least that's my take.
"McCormack probably can't identify the continent Somalia is on, so let's get real intelligence on the table or the US should refrain from saying "suspected terrorist"......"
McCormack's a talking dog. Don't confuse the guy doing the talking with the guy making the decisions. Not the same thing.

So is this how "clear & transparent democracy" works?
You're talking about Ogaden & Puntland as options when you saw what happened in just 1 city....
One thing about Somalis and their politics is that your'e bound to get 1,000 repercussions for 1 concerted action.........
Shia/Sunni is cake compared to the ultra-fluid politics in Somalia.......

I am quite familiar with how Somali politics works. I have watched very closely how the Ehtiopians have manipulated you guys for decades. Don't tell me it can't be done.
Sometimes transparancy is not possible in international relations. A fact of life. You can't always say what the truth is. If you don't understand this, I suggest you read Machiavelli. The world isn't always the way we would like it to be.
Transparency is more important in domestic politics than international politics. The reasons for this I would hope are obvious.
