There was a union and it was the Northerners who pushed the idea much to the consternation of some Southern politicians who wanted a delayed union until both administrations wereally stable.

And for a fact, Hiiraan had the greatest number of no votes of any province. The whole union was a bad idea for the South because it brought two governments who had limited resources and systems.

From a legal perspective there was no union.

Yes, the people of Somaliland pushed the Somaliweyn agenda because they thought that was the only way to regain Hawd and liberate Djibouti. Isaaq was the majority in Djibouti at that time before the French deportation.

Few southern politicians opposed the union. The ones who did feared that they would lose their administrative positions and thus orchestrated anti union demonstrations in Mogadishu after Somaliland gained its independence. Similar demonstrations took place in 1977 when the Somali army had liberated 85% of Somali Galbeed and Djibouti was about to become an independent nation. The southern politicians feared that Somali Galbeed would unite with Djibouti and thus create another Somali country that would rival the Somali republic.

Abdiwahab, the truth is, in the course of history, southern politicians have always been egoistic and self serving. They believe they are the sole legitimate representatives of the Somali people and that's why you'll hear Xassan Sheikh, who's guarded by 30.000 Ugandan/Burundian soldiers, call himself "Madaxweynaha ummada Somaliyeed" as if he's the president of Somalis in Djibouti, Somaliland, Kenya etc.

You can make the same assessment of Northern politicians who were more culpable. They decided to trade away independence because they could not agree on how to split power after independence. Because of this disagreement they pushed for a union and even then they couldn't come together to guarantee the prime ministership went to one of them.

As for the Koonfur politicians, they are of a different breed especially those of the post 1991 era. HSM and his lot are not politicians in my view because they are not representatives of their respective constiuents. However, his title is correct: he is the president of the Somalis. Ethiopian, Kenyan and Djibouti ethnic Somalis are considered "Ethiopian, Kenyans, and Djiboutians not Somali citizens.

AbdiWahab, to be fair 'Ummadda Soomaaliyeed' is our ethno-linguistic ummah. He should be called 'Madaxweynaha Dalka Soomaaliya' because that is technically his job, and where his jurisdiction ends.

The SNL already had the majority of the seats in the National Assembly and Cigaal was the Prime Minister of Somaliland. The seats were allocated in accordance with the results of the parliamentary elections held on February, 1960.

It was the people of Somaliland that forced the politicians to ratify the Act of Union. People were standing outside the parliamentary building just to show they were serious and it was the people who forced Cigaal and his delegation to travel to Mogadishu. Many of the politicians in Somaliland including Cigaal, Michael Maryama, Garad Jamac etc. opposed the hastiness.

It's the people of Somaliland that oppose Somalia today.

Somali is an ethnic group, he's not the president of all Somalis. There are communities in Somalia that hail from Yemen, Oman etc. some of them came to Somalia 60 years ago. They're not ethnic Somalis but he's still their presidents, right?
