One definitely is not sainted by a church like the Catholic church. Saint and Awliya do not always carry the same conotations, and therefore are terrible translations of eachother, but they hold similar positions in the minds of each respective religion. What they share is that they are usually people who were known especially known for having the qualities of: Piety, humbleness, godfearingness, chaste, spiritual, honesty, renouncing worldly pursuits especially wealth. An awliya is a "friend" of Allah, because of their intense devotion to the religion, their purity of heart, and unshakable faith, reflecting the beauty of the religion both inwardly and outwardly, Allah raises them to that stature and rank. Only Allah can make someone an Awliya, since it is a relationship between Allah and them.
