A jilted husband who killed his wife's cat by "cooking it" in a tumble dryer is facing jail today.

Cat suffered cruel treatment.

Philip Gannon stuffed William, the English short-haired kitty into the dryer as an act of spite after his marriage broke down.

He had originally bought the pet as a present for his wife Jacqueline Hodson.

But in January 2005 she found the six-month-old cat's remains inside the appliance after William had suffered a terrifying and agonising death.

Ms Hodson called the police, who contacted the RSPCA and 42-year-old Gannon was charged. He is due to appear before magistrates in Bolton today.

Animal experts said William would have suffered a painful end and was effectively "cooked to death".

His damaged claws indicated he had tried to cling on to the revolving drum and escape.

Following Gannon's trial, the RSPCA said it was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they had ever dealt with.

He faces up to six months in prison after being found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering.

He also faces a lifetime ban on keeping animals.
