Somaliland Interior Minister Quits


The interior minister of Somalia’s breakaway government of Somaliland, Dr. Mohamed Abdi Gabose, announced his resignation and plan to establish a new political party, during a press conference in Hargeisa on Thursday.

“I want to follow my political ambitions so I forwarded my resignation letter to the president, which he accepted," said Dr. Gabose.

Dr. Gabose has always been vocal about forming a new party and previously campaigned to implement a multiple party system, which was approved by Somaliland parliament last week.

The former interior minister is a well-known politician in the country and used to lead the Sahan party, of which a majority of its members were from his clan. He later joined the Udub Party, but immediately withdrew from it.

In early 2008, Dr. Gabose formed the Qaran party and became its chairman, but the former Riyaale administration banned his party since the country did not allow for more than three parties at once.

After his party was forced to close, he joined the governing party of Kulmiye, which was the biggest opposition party in the country and played a significant role in Riyaale's defeat and the election of Somaliland's current president, Mohamed Ahmed Silanyo.

It’s expected that Gobose will be a strong opposition leader who can challenge the current government.

Gobose’s resignation comes as President Silanyo returns from China where he signed a trilateral agreement between Somaliland, Ethiopia and China to expand Berbera port.
