Ethiopia nile issue with Egypt getting worse

Post by Coeus »

It seems that the Egyptians are concerned about their nile water is gonna vanish when ethiopia is claiming its share along with 5 other countries. This week Meles zenawi told egypt that if a war would occur, egypt wouldnt stand a chance. This of course shocked Egypt and their relations are worse then ever.

Read:

Meles Zenawi, the Ethiopian prime minister, has told Reuters that Egypt could not win a war with Ethiopia over the Nile river.

In an interview on Tuesday, Meles also accused Egypt of trying to destabilise his country by supporting several small rebel groups, but said it was a tactic that would no longer work.

"If we address the issues around which the rebel groups are mobilised then we can neutralise them and therefore make it impossible for the Egyptians to fish in troubled waters because there won't be any," he said.

"Hopefully that should convince the Egyptians that, as direct conflict will not work, and as the indirect approach is not as effective as it used to be, the only sane option will be civil dialogue."

In response, Egypt said it was "amazed" by Ethiopia's suggestion that Cairo might turn to military action in a row over the Nile waters, saying it did not want confrontation and that it was not backing rebels there.

"I'm amazed by the language that was used. We are not seeking war and there will not be war," Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Egyptian foreign minister, told Reuters during a visit to Abu Dhabi.

In a statement, the minister said the "charges that Egypt is exploiting rebel groups against the ruling regime in Ethiopia are completely devoid of truth."

Locked talks

Egypt, Ethiopia and seven other countries through which the Nile river passes have been locked in more than a decade of contentious talks driven by anger over the perceived injustice of a previous Nile water treaty signed in 1929.

Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya signed a new deal to share the waters in May, provoking Egypt to call it a "national security" issue.

Meles said he was not happy with the rhetoric coming from the Egyptians but dismissed the claims of some analysts that war could eventually erupt.

"I am not worried that the Egyptians will suddenly invade Ethiopia.

"Nobody who has tried that has lived to tell the story. I don't think the Egyptians will be any different and I think they know that," Meles said.

Nile dependency

Egypt, almost totally dependent on the Nile and threatened by climate change, says the Nile waters feed a farm sector accounting for a third of all jobs. Cairo is wary of dam construction in upstream countries that could affect flows.

Ethiopia has built five huge dams on the Nile in the last decade and has begun work on a $1.4bn hydro-power facility.

Hossam Zaki, the Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman, said it was "regrettable" that Ethiopia and other states had sought a new agreement.

"Egypt is firmly behind its legal and political positions on the issue of the Nile water," Zaki said, adding that Egypt had pursued dialogue and co-operation on the use of the Nile's water.

The five signatories of the new deal have given the other Nile Basin countries one year to join the pact before putting it into action. Sudan has backed Egypt while Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi have so far refused to sign.

What is your opinion? Even though Ethiopia is the archenemy of Somalia, witch party would you support and why?

Egypt is getting bullied around by ethiopia, they rearranged the water division among the nile state without the consultation of egypt and now they escalating the political rhetoric and e accusing egypt of baseless allegations.unless the egyptians do something about they will soon be living off of the american wheat assitance and saudi cash grants.the funny thing is all egyptian political analysts are now crying a river about, how that would never happend if there was a strong somali state that pressures ethiopia.thats what egyptians bitches get for playing destructive role in somalia

The egyptians are especially mad because the funding for the building of the dam is sponsored by china and Israel. Soon the arabs will see that Ethiopia truly wields power in the horn. This can be catashtrophic for Somalia if we get divided, we will be nothing but mere ethiopian pawns.

LOL Ethiopians will occupy Egypt knowing the arabs faggots cowardise Both Egpyt and Ethiopia exist on Aid donations from the USA... you know who will have the last say.

There will be no war, neither is independent or free to act as they wish.

Egypt must learn to accept any water they get considering the water is originating from ethiopia, they are lucky ethiopia do not direct all their sewage in the stream heading towards egypt.

:D

I do believe Ethiopia would woop the ass of Egyptians
Once egyptians are shown real challenge no more aid will they get from USA.

Good to see the Egptyians this time suffer cos they have been responsible for the woes in Palestine, Iraq,Lebanon an partialy Somalia

Egypt has a far superior air force and would definitely wipe the floor with Ethiopia in a limited war.

After Israel, it is Egypt getting the most US military aid.

The Arabs are stupid idiots thoug and Egypt is a major bytch for its blockade of Gaza.

Egypts aid will be over or severly reduced if they touch Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the coutnry getting most aid in the whole world. This is what egypt already knows.

I say let the arabs have it, Somali interest would collide with arab interest someday anyway. With egypt and Sudan severly weakaned maybe Somalia can be rebuild and start taking their place.

Egyptian foriegn policy is the stupidest i have ever seen, its probably the stupidest in history...

When they should have been backing up sudan to the end, they ignored it?

They should have trained the sudanese to egyptian levels, and have a strategic alliance against ethiopia..

Any moves on the nile, would have led to Ethiopia facing egyptian/sudanese troops and Eritrea at the same time....

now with south sudan forming, they have fucked up......

may god save us from arab incompetance......

if ethiopia becomes a formidable foe for egypt all the preferential treatment would ceise to exist.
air force is nothing if there is no ground force.
good example was the israel vs hizbullah war.

so egpty will feel the heat once the western media and the west turns in favour of ethiopia and israel would surely help ethiopia ininstalling sophisticated radar system and anti aircraft missile.

I see the future of Egypt being bleek. 8-)

Egypt is a better strategic ally and will thus receive American support. The starving residents of Abyssinia may be able to dominate braindead Somalis, but the not the Egyptians.

And LOL at the suggestion that Somalia will be able to take the place of Sudan and Egypt. That's rich.
