Wikileaks: Kenya´s intention for Somalia

Post by Coeus »

‘According to the leak, Kenyan security chiefs are considering the creation of an autonomous buffer region in Jubaland – the area of Somalia that borders Kenya – kind of like the ones in Somaliland and Punt land. The capital of the autonomous buffer region would be in Kismayu.

‘Kenya has a sizeable Muslim Somali population and is afraid of fundamentalist Islamism on its doorstep in a lawless Somalia. A stable buffer region in Jubaland would guard against radicalisation of Kenya’s Somali youth in the northeast, on top of checking the proliferation of small arms in the country.

‘Kenya also might be thinking long term. A divided Somalia guarantees less chances of success for a greater Somalia irredentist movement if peace ever descends upon the entire country.

‘Ethiopia is not a fond of the idea. The last thing Addis Ababa wants is an autonomous region that can fund Somali separatists in the Ogaden. The region would also have a demonstration effect on Ogadeni Ethiopians who for decades now have fought for real political and economic autonomy from Addis Ababa.

i heard it is a business joint venture between Kenya and China. Can you imagine Obama and the shababs on one side of this conflict! US predator planes relaying aerial photographs to shabab commanders on the ground! US will most likely try to sabotage and China expansion.

If this happens, it is going to be Jubba Valley of China (JVC) protected by Kenyan army with fake peacekeeping helmets. Somali insurgents will get more national and international support.

Voltage

Are you serious about wanting Kenya to annex Jubba regions? Or are you just frustrated at Somalia's current and never ending saga.

China is loved in Africa. I went to Southern Africa and they love Chinese more than they love the West. This is because China doesn't fund corrupt dictators for their own support. In fact China doesn't care about who rules at all  they just build hard infrastructure making sure the money goes to the projects under local control. The West is really hypocritical sometimes for always running to "China doesn't care about Africa's political situation"...well YEAH because the only reason you care is you want your guys in control.

China was what in the 70's? I mean compared to what it is today yet Somalia's only highway which goes north and south and many national infrastructure including stadium Mogadishu was built by China. China is smart. The West would like to stay in power by keeping Africa as subjects...China wants to rise by seeking Africa especially as partners. What is going on in Africa is neo-colonialism vs. Chinese soft power and Chinese soft power seems to have gained the upperhand when they replaced the US as the largest trading partner to Africa in the last two years.

Recently I watched an interview Christian Amanpour had with Rwandan president Paul Kagame in her late CNN show (forgot the name but you can find the segment on youtube). She asked Kagame isn't he concerned that China is building a new parliament for them? He looked at her seriously and said so what if Chinese gives us a new gift in building a parliament for us. At least we had a choice to accept and refuse, why don't you ask about the Europeans who gave us their languages, culture, law system, and boundaries by force and have been taking our resources without our say? Shib bay tiri.

I see nothing wrong with Chinese involvement in Jubbaland, at least infrastructure and public institutions bay noo dhisi like they just revamped Addis Ababa's skyline. Ethiopia was and is still a Western ally for long time but had stagnant infrastruct for decades due to West putting money into coffers of dictators like Zenewi while China seeks out Ethiopian business partners and helps build it infrastructure. Basically China sees the African leadership as tools of neo-colonialism and the oppressed people as it's ally. They are looking for a way to break the subservient link between leader and people in Africa for its own autocratic good. Still, Addis Ababa is on its way to looking like a city in South Africa.

Most of the world's success stories are largely pluralistic nations. I see no future for a homogenous Somalia who see other clan as the enemy. Did you ever real corruption (ina adeernimo) is inherently part of Somali culture? Your own Somaliland, Kulmiye is Habar Jeclo tool despite some different components and all the Habar Jeclo here from LiqayeTDH to GeneralSNM entertained Somaliweynism during their frustrations with Siilaanyo being outmaneuvered by Riyaale couple times and when Siilaanyo became pres, a prominent Habar Yoonis has not showed up since and other Habar Yonis hardly talk about Somaliland anymore and don't sound supportive when they do. Also look, most African countries had civil war. Sudan is the latest...South Africa was one, Uganda was one, Liberia, Sierra Leone...all those countries had two competing forces...the government or opposition. South Africa had ANC for all Blacks, not Zulus ANC and Sotho another group in the compaign, etc. Somalia had a government on one side and then one clan this group, this clan this group, this clan this group until the whole government broke up. Why didn't the opposition group into a single opposition front...because they were incapable to unite even fighting a single enemy and are not capable of sharing power peacefully.

No Somali ruled area that is not pluralistic will succeed.

voltage I had to dig this article. It is about China's hunger for natural resources. They got copper filled mountains in Peru at 95% discount. The Chinese are taking the whole world by storm. Arming Kenya to tap into Somalia's natural resources is not surprising.

China Boss in Peru on $50 Billion Peak Bought for $810 Million

China is not yesterday's China and Somalia is different of course. If they come in Kenyan tanks, they have the money and military power to stay for decades and decades. They may even try to extend their reach and buy the whole country. Or worse, the western companies may go to Ethiopia and buy the rest of the country too.

We'll be insurgents as usual and life will go on :)

Voltage, shut the fuck up. We are not gonna become another zimbabwe dependent on china. China is in africa for only ONE reason. RESOURCES! The geonocide they conducted in darfur and the attempted exploration they tried in Ogaden just shows that they dont care if people are suffering. No thanks. Until Somalila has get rid of Al shabab, no one will be doing anything. Take your bantu love ass to kenya, dont preach the dissolvment of Somalia like it was a good thing.

Somalia will have its own companies and we wont be ripped of our resources for low prices JUST LIKE KONGO.

Poor guy, Western bias reeks from you. Brother every nation acts on its national interest but I ask you to travel to Africa where China is involved and see the difference in attitude towards the two powers. With the West it is zero-sum-gain for Africans beyond shady NGO's who do a little thing for photo op while China fuses massive investment in the land which the West denies to Africa to keep it poor and ineffective.

Kenya can dream all that it wants to seize Somalia's South but it is a dream that will inshalla'Allah never materialize. What can Kenya do that 50,000 well-armed and well-trained Ethiopians could not have done? Let us get real here.

The claim that Kenya is a plural society has no merit where in fact the napotism and tribalism is far worse than Somalia. All that is going for them is that the west has no policy of dismantling it where in fact it is an imposed chaos and peace / stability is denied in Somalia. Somehow, Kenyan political elite are yes men to the British and any Anglo-Saxon dictation. It is well-known it is hard to do that in Somalia.
